Explore Your Missouri Fresh Produce Market

By George Stevens

Make a trip to the local market a fun family outing. If it is planned right, the children will love finding special products at a Missouri fresh produce market. Encourage them to find food they would like to try. Include them in discovering how to prepare it at home.

One thing that will motivate you to check the local market first is the freshness of all they sell. Other stores do not begin to provide the same kind of freshness. The items that other stores sell are often picked while they are still green and are in transit to the stores where they are left on the shelves for days. They may look great on the shelf, but they do not compare in taste to the fresh produce market. Local fruits and vegetables are picked fresh just before they are sold.

A benefit to shopping at local farmers markets is the opportunity to make friends with farmers from the area and some of the small business owners that are just getting started. It is not uncommon to be offered special discounts once you become well known. Helping people succeed in their local business is an opportunity that should not be passed up.

Many of the farmers that sell their fruits and vegetables locally plant and grow them organically. That makes them healthier and safer for the whole family to enjoy. In many cases no chemicals are used at all.

The taste of a tomato locally grown and one purchased from the grocery store are considerably different. The local tomato has a much more delicious taste because it is not picked when it is green. The best and most tastiest meals that can be cooked are those that use local fruits and vegetables.

It is not uncommon for the small business owners and local farmers to sell their crops at reasonable prices even if it is considered organic. Those items labeled organic in the local stores are usually considerably higher priced even if they are not fresh. The local sellers can sell their food cheaper because they have less overhead.

Seasonal produce is what is most commonly found in the fresh markets in the community. Vegetables and fruits change as the seasons change. This makes it possible for the entire community to enjoy the truest and most delicious flavors and allows them to experience the freshness of seasonal produce. Little by little the local people get used to using and eating the food available during each season.

When strolling through a farmers market, it is not unusual to find special foods or vegetables and fruits that are not found in community stores. Oftentimes ladies enjoy making things they have baked in their kitchen or that they learned how to make from their mothers or grandmothers years ago. They love sharing their stories with the buyers who pass by, and they welcome questions about what the items are, how to prepare them and how to use them.
