You Could Have A Great Business Buying Wholesale Bagels And Reselling Them

By Timothy Brown

It's not unusual for employees to daydream about owning their own businesses. They imagine they could make their own hours and have the chance to earn some serious cash. The reality is that business owners put in more hours than almost anyone else. Some do eventually earn substantial sums, but not at first. If you are serious about becoming an entrepreneur and love people, you might consider opening a small shop, buying wholesale bagels, and selling them at retail prices.

There are advantages to purchasing baked goods instead of making them yourself. If you don't know anything about making bagels for instance, you will have to take the time to learn how to create really unique and special ones. You will need expensive equipment and some employees. You could spent that time instead working in a shop with someone willing to teach you the retail business.

Ideas are great, but you need to have some capital to start your business. Family and friends are often the best possibilities. You could approach them with the idea of making them silent partners in the venture if they aren't interested in becoming active partners. Failing that, you may have to take your business plan to a lender, make a compelling presentation, and hope you can get a loan.

One way to make your money go farther is by opening a take out only shop. That way you won't have to invest in as much furniture or hire as many employees as an eat in establishment would require. You can also get away with renting a much smaller place.

If all you plan on is offering bagels, you are missing a great opportunity. Selling different varieties of coffees, teas, and juices will add revenue, and these items just naturally go along with other breakfast items. Jellies, jams, cream cheese, and maybe some chocolate in refrigerated units are worth trying.

It would be nice if you didn't have to spend money on advertising and marketing, but you will so you might as well do it right. Your website should go up before you open the shop doors for the first time. Advertising a grand opening with discounts, door prizes, and coupons will get people in the door. Enticing them with specials on a regular basis is one way to develop a loyal customer base.

Even though you're not baking the bagels from scratch yourself, you can always keep batches warming in your oven. Not only will you have a fresh product to offer your customers, the aroma will entice passers by into your shop. With a little, light background music and an easel outside the door advertising daily specials, your shop should stay busy.

Starting a business isn't easy. Staying in business and making a success of it is even harder. To have a chance, you have to be prepared to work harder, longer, and smarter than your competition.
