The Sault Ste. Marie Area Is A Place Of Natural Wonders

By Frances Allen

Michigan encourages visitors to travel to the northernmost regions of the state. There is spectacular scenery to be enjoyed every season of the year. The twin cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Ontario are separated the St. Mary's River and connected by an international bridge. The upper peninsula has so much to see and do that the choices will impress even the most sophisticated travelers.

No trip here would be complete without a visit to the Soo Locks. They are one of the largest and busiest engineering achievements in the northern hemisphere. From May through October you have an opportunity to book a cruise in order to experience firsthand the massive amount of ships that pass through the locks each day. Lighthouse cruises, dining cruises, and fireworks cruises are available.

Most people have not had an opportunity to see a real waterfall. They may have looked at pictures and seen movies that include these natural wonders as a backdrop. When you travel to northern Michigan, you can see some of the most beautiful falls at Tahquamenon. They exist on upper and lower levels and must be seen to be appreciated.

It is not unusual that this area has been home to a number of shipwrecks during its long history. There are plenty of opportunities for scuba divers to check out the remains of numerous ships resting at the bottom of both Lake Superior and Lake Huron. You might want to take a glass bottom boat tour instead of donning scuba gear. You can see what is left of one such ship located just below the surface of the lake.

Train tours seem like something travelers did generations ago, but they are available today and a great way to see the countryside from an unusual vantage point. The excursions will take you over trestles and wind their way down to the canyon's floor. This trip is especially popular during the last of September when the leaves are at their maximum color and brilliance.

After a long day of hiking and sightseeing, you might want to relax and try your luck at the Kewadin Casino. You could stay at the hotel here, which is affordably priced, while you hit the gaming tables or enjoy some of the top country entertainment that is regularly booked in the DreamMakers Theater. There is also a lounge that books excellent entertainers and has comedy and karaoke nights.

The Northern Lights are a naturally occurring phenomenon visible in this area. They appear as a result of certain activity on the sun, but just when and where they show up is anybody's guess. Spring and fall are the seasons the light show most often appears. A lot of people do online research to see if conditions will be right when they are in the area.

Vacationing in northern Michigan is a special experience. It will make you appreciate just what an amazing world we live in.
