Will Culinary School Promise You The World?

By Shawn Cutler

Should you take out a student loan for culinary school? Many school advisers will promise you a high paying salary after you graduate. They often tell you that most of their graduates are earning over $50,000 after only two years out of school. They offer you incentives to join their program. However, is culinary school worth the money and can you actually benefit on it? You may find it beneficial to go to culinary school if it's your dream to become a chef. It is true that culinary school has a lot of passionate students working in the field. You must love food in order to become a great chef. Many chefs today are finding the industry to be growing. Most people eat out at least once a day.

It is important to learn more about managing people, food and menus. When you prepare for a role as a chef, you need lots of practice. Culinary school programs are often six months to 4 years. During this time, you learn about catering, preparing foods for large groups of people and creating fancy eye appealing dishes. Culinary school can often cost you between $10,000 to $200,000. It all depends on the school that you go to. Many culinary schools have good names. The French Culinary Institute is a name that most chefs in the industry recognize. It is a school that demands perfection from its students. Many graduates from this school go on to get good jobs and work as leaders in the industry. What can you learn in culinary school though?

There are many different aspects that go into a chef's job. Most chefs today say that they feel unprepared to take on large parties. They often wish that they went to a good cooking school in order to learn more. Most chefs that did not go to school say that they wish they would have. It actually helps to get different people's opinions. In culinary school, you get a vast array of experienced people talking about food. You may feel insecure and like you don't know as much. However, put your pride down and learn as much as you can. Once you get into the real world, ideas start to flow a lot easier.

Culinary school is also a time in which many people say that they are learning about food preparation. Most culinary students say that they are tired of waiting to become a chef. However, if you are 20 something hears old, it's hard to get a restaurant to give you control over a kitchen worth over $500,000. Often, your education will show that you are mature enough to get through a program and work hard on menus and preparation of food. It is important to show your expert skills in the culinary field.

Many business owners like Amy from Amy's Bread in NYC got a culinary education before starting their own business. She graduated from the New York Restaurant School and did rather well for herself. She has been featured on several television shows and I think that she has the best bread in the United States. It is extremely fancy and delicious artisan style bread. Workers that do not attend culinary school often spend a few years in the industry before getting promoted to a sous chef or head chef position. Some people spend a lifetime in the industry without ever advancing beyond a line cook.
