Some Tips On Using Egg Seasoning

By Cornelia Reyes

Food is seasoned by adding salt, spices and herbs. These ingredients are also used in suitable combinations. Egg seasoning needs to be carefully chosen so that the taste is complimented rather than overpowered. Seasonings are added at different stages during the cooking process as well as after cooking to produce the best taste.

Hot seasonings give eggs a delicious kick. They include peppercorns, ground pepper, curry, paprika and cayenne pepper. Mixed pepper spice is also used. Fresh peppers like green bell peppers and cherry peppers work well too. Dicing these fresh peppers helps to distribute the flavor more evenly through the eggs. Adding chunks of fresh peppers gives texture but making these chunks too large can affect the taste. Spices need to be used carefully as many of them are strong and too much will spoil the flavor of a dish.

There are many different herbs and combinations of herbs that go very well with egg dishes. Herbs like thyme, basil and oregano give a wonderful Italian flavor to omelets and scrambled eggs, especially when combined with some fresh tomato. The taste of a cheese souffle is enhanced with the addition of parsley and basil. An egg salad would not be the same without some green chili and chives.

Onions, garlic, green onions and chives are often referred to as condiments rather than seasonings. Whatever they are called these ingredients all work wonderfully with eggs. Mustard and Worcestershire sauce are two hot condiments that many people use with their eggs.

Herbs, spices and blends are all available at most local stores as well as from many online stores. The blends are worth experimenting with as they are prepared by experts who understand how to combine flavors. This removes guesswork and assures you of a product that works well. Such a blend may even give you ideas on new dishes using eggs for your family to enjoy.

Sweet seasonings like honey and sugar are not often used with eggs. Some people do choose to use cinnamon with eggs but this is unconventional. Those who enjoy this will also most likely enjoy the addition of sun-dried tomatoes or even a hint of nutmeg or vanilla extract.

Eggs are used so often by most cooks that they may run out of ideas of how to make dishes with a difference. This is when you need to consider ingredients like sun-dried tomatoes or a touch of capers to add some gourmet flair. Sun-dried tomatoes may be used in scrambled eggs and omelets. They can also be tossed with some hard boiled eggs, adding a couple of chunks of fresh tomato for contrast and moisture. Top with a green onion garnish and you have the perfect meal.

Eggs are a convenient and healthy choice for a meal. They are easy to prepare and pack a protein punch. Choosing the right egg seasoning is important to the taste. Make an effort to learn what herbs and spices work best and how to combine them. If you do this, you will never be short of a healthy and tasty meal for family and friends.
