The Story Behind Kosher MRE Rations

By Myrtle Cash

It is true that the driving force behind meals ready to eat were the military. Due to the sheer size of the military it is unsurprising that all faiths are represented within its numbers. With the more devout religious followers there are some dietary needs that needed to be addressed. With regards to members of the Jewish faith this gave rise to kosher mre rations. Due to their strict adherence to the Jewish laws and traditions they are also ideal for individuals and disaster relief areas.

These meals are designed to be easily carried, as each man will be carrying his own rations. Therefore the packaging is lightweight, as opposed to the older rations which came in cans. These new style rations do not require water or heating to make them ready for consumption.

It is often said that military rations sit on a shelf gathering dust, and then they get issued to front line troops. As Jewish service personnel are a minority the throughput of these rations is much quicker. Therefore when these rations reach the intended person they are that much fresher.

To achieve the kosher label, all of these meals have to be prepared as detailed by Jewish law. This will also include any preparation facilities, and whatever utensils are used. Attention to detail is everything, even the packaging methods and materials are inspected.

When most people think of the word kosher, they assume that it is to do with the meat. In part this is true. For any meat to be classed in such a way, it has to have been slaughtered in the time tested way, adhering to Jewish practices and teachings. The lungs are to be defect free, and smooth, if any defects are found the meat is considered treif, or non-kosher.

Even grain products have to measure up. The five classic grains of old Israel are Wheat, Barley, Oats, Spelt and Rye. These have to have been planted and rooted prior to Passover. If it doesn't measure up it will have to wait until next year. Rice and Corn are exempt from this as they are not considered the same as the classic grains.

Military rations are often considered incomplete without a soup. With these specialised ready to eat meals there also has to have been strict controls to ensure that these are parve. Which means that there are no meat or dairy products contained. Also that there has been absolutely no way that either has come into any form of contact. Vegetarians and Vegans also like this certification.

There are also inspections for any leafy green vegetables that might have been used. Also any dairy products are certified that they have been under rabbinical care. This will be from milking all of the way through to packaging.

Despite the fact that the initial purpose for these kosher mre rations was to feed troops of the Jewish faith, they do have other uses. If a disaster occurs somewhere in the world and it affects Jewish people then these meals are ideal. Even ordinary civilians have been acquiring a taste for them.
