Keep These Foodstuffs Out Of Your Fridge

By John Brown

It might be very easy to automatically put all of your groceries into your fridge but this is not the best option. Here are some foods that you should not keep in your fridge, but rather in your pantry or on top of your kitchen counter.

Apples

Leave apples on top of the counter or even in a large bowl. If after a few weeks you notice that they have not been eaten, then you can store them in the fridge to help them survive a little longer.

Berries

These fruits taste their best whilst kept at room temperature, whereas colder temperatures can reduce its flavour. If the berries are going to be eaten very quickly, then leave it out of the fridge. It is not a bad idea to leave in the small fridge freezer as well if you require them to last a bit longer. Ensure that you clean them before eating them. However do not wash the berries before putting them in, since this can lead to mushy and moldy berries.

Garlic

Garlic is best stored in a well ventilated, cool and dry area. The cloves will endure for quite some time in these conditions. If the garlic head is broken off, then you must use it within ten days.

Melons

Do not cut up your melons until you intend to eat them right away. To get the best flavour out of them, store them on top of your counter. Scientists have shown that when melons are store under these conditions, they retain more of their antioxidants and are thus healthier and more beneficial to you. Once you do cut them, store them in the fridge for 3 or 4 days.

Onions

The fairly cool temperatures of a fridge will cause onions to become moldy and mushy. This is why you should keep onions in a well ventilated location as well as in a dimly lit area. If find that you have onion left over after cutting them, place these pieces into a resealable bad and then leave it inside the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator.

Potatoes

The cold temperature of a fridge will also ruin potatoes and make them taste quite bad. It is best to store them in a cool, dry area, just like onions.

Stone Fruit

These fruits taste better when you leave them on top of the counter. If you want them to last a little longer, then you should put them into the fridge.

Tomatoes

Putting tomatoes into a fridge will cause them to taste starchy and tasteless. Once again, tomatoes are best kept on your kitchen counter.
